Dinner bills become awkward when one person ordered a salad, another ordered cocktails, and the group still says "just split it evenly." A fair dinner split starts by deciding which costs are shared and which should be assigned to specific people.
Split shared items equally
Shared starters, bottles, desserts, service fees, and table-wide discounts can usually be divided across everyone who participated. If someone did not drink alcohol or arrived late, exclude them from those items.
Assign personal items directly
Main dishes, individual drinks, and guest meals can be assigned to the people who ordered them. This avoids resentment while still keeping the calculation simple.
Handle tax and tip consistently
The easiest method is to split tax and tip proportionally based on each person’s share of the pre-tax bill. For casual groups, an equal split can also work if everyone agrees.
